Conference Speakers


Paul Shepherd

Paul Shepherd serves as the System Director for Student Development and Success for the Minnesota State System of colleges and universities based in St. Paul, MN. In this role, Paul leads system wide initiatives designed to foster student success and provides support for all student affairs and enrollment management functional areas at the 37 colleges and universities in the Minnesota State system. Paul has served the student affairs profession for 16 years spending the bulk of his career working in residence life at UW-La Crosse and UW-Eau Claire and student life at UW-River Falls. Paul is passionate about creating, implementing and evaluating student engagement experiences designed to foster student learning, a heightened sense of belonging, and increased rates of persistence to degree completion. Paul earned a doctorate in Education Leadership and researched the intersection of student engagement experiences, social class identity, and persistence to graduation. WCPA has been Paul's professional home since attending his first WCPA has an undergraduate student at UW-Whitewater. Paul had the honor of serving as a president of WCPA and is thrilled to be returning home to be a part of this year's conference.

Tori Svoboda

Tori Svoboda, Ed.D., is an assistant professor in the Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education graduate program at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. Prior to joining the faculty, Tori spent over 20 years as a college administrator, most recently as the Associate Dean of Students, Diversity & Inclusion at the University of St. Thomas (MN). Tori's research and practice centers on advancing issues of equity and social justice in systems of higher education. Tori frequently writes and talks about how traditional student services (e.g., academic and career advising, orientation, or student leadership programs) may unintentionally marginalize underrepresented populations.
